Running a Soft Serve Machine in Cold Weather

Running a Soft Serve Machine in Cold Weather

Soft serve machines are engineered for warm, busy service rooms. Put one in a cold kitchen, a winter market or an unheated trailer and you get slow recovery, weak texture and compressor short-cycling. Here is how to run your AXOSPRO soft serve machine when the temperature drops.

Cold weather do and dont checklist for soft serve machines

Why cold is a problem

The compressor expects a warm ambient load. In a cold room it short-cycles (kicks on and off too fast), the hopper mix stays too cold to draw properly, and recovery between cones drags. This is not a fault — it is the machine fighting an environment it was not designed for.

What to do

  • Keep the room above 10–15°C (50–59°F).
  • Use a hopper heater or insulated blanket in cold kitchens so the mix stays in the working range.
  • Prime and run a test draw 15–20 minutes before opening.
  • Temper mix to 2–4°C and let it sit 30 minutes before loading.

What not to do

  • Don't run it inside a walk-in cooler or unheated trailer without a heat source.
  • Don't ignore slow recovery — add heat before the lunch rush, not during it.

For permanent placement planning, our ventilation & clearance guide still applies — just add a heat source to the checklist.
