Soft Serve vs Frozen Yogurt: Can One Machine Do Both?

Soft Serve vs Frozen Yogurt: Can One Machine Do Both?

Same machine, different mix?

Yes — a standard soft serve machine can run frozen yogurt, because both are pumped through the same freezing cylinder. The difference is in the mix, serving temperature and (often) overrun, not the hardware. You do not need a separate "froyo machine" for low-volume menus.

Texture and temperature

Soft serve Frozen yogurt
Serve temp −4 to −7 °C −6 to −8 °C (served a touch warmer/softer)
Fat 5–12% (dairy) or mix-dependent 0–4% (low-fat culture base)
Overrun 30–60% 20–40% (denser)
Acidity Neutral Tangy (live/active cultures)

Mix and culture

Frozen yogurt uses a yogurt/culture base, lower fat and often less sugar than soft serve mix. Because it is more acidic and lower fat, it can taste thin if you push the same high overrun — ease the setting down for a denser, tangier cup. Storage and yield details are in our mix guide.

Cleaning and sanitation

Yogurt's cultures and acidity mean you should clean and sanitise at least as often as dairy soft serve — daily for non-HT machines, with extra attention to the dasher and seals. See the daily SOP.

One machine or two? Menu strategy

  • Low volume / rotating menu: one machine, switch mix (clean between). Cheapest and fine for most cafés.
  • High volume, both every day: two machines so you never lose a flavour during a clean or a rush. A soft serve vs gelato or soft serve vs hard ice cream read helps if you are widening the menu further.

Which AXOSPRO machine

For a swappable soft-serve / froyo program, a twin-twist or dual-hoppper model lets you run two mixes and twist them. Start with the soft serve collection or the AXOSPRO BQL-808-1, and size output with the 2026 buying guide.

About AXOSPRO commercial frozen-dessert equipment

AXOSPRO supplies commercial soft serve machines, slush / frozen-drink machines, commercial ice makers, popsicle machines and fried-ice-cream machines for North American restaurants, cafés, bars, hotels, food trucks and scoop shops. Equipment is built by Gongly (Jiangmen Guangli Machinery), our manufacturing partner in Jiangmen, China.

Two fulfilment channels: in-stock models ship from our US warehouse in 10–15 business days; other models and custom or high-volume orders are factory-direct from Jiangmen, China by sea in 30–45 days. For factory-direct sea shipments, import duties and brokerage are the buyer's responsibility — we provide commercial invoice and packing list to clear customs. We do not state "no customs" or "no import duty", because that only applies to domestic US-warehouse orders.
